Critical Piston Clearance Measurements on

Modern Gas and Diesel Engines

 

The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information on measuring piston clearance on modern gas and diesel engines. While the piston skirt clearance has always been a critical aspect of engine building it has recently become more important as clearances have diminished with new coatings being applied to many pistons.

 

One piston manufacturer has gone to great lengths to make available the desired piston clearance by stamping/etching it atop of their pistons. That manufacturer is Mahle and the following is their recommendations for their current pistons.

 

 

 

Updated Engine Components for 2019 Dodge 6.7L Diesel Engine

 

The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information on updated engine components for the 2019 and newer Dodge 6.7L diesel engines. The following information should be considered when working on this newer version used in Dodge trucks. Interchanging components from previous years engines may not prove effective.

 

 

 

EcoBoost 2.3L Engine

2015 marked the first time in history, where every engine in the Mustang lineup was 300 plus HP. This is also the first time, since the mid-80’s Mustang SVO, that a 2.3L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is part of the Mustang engine lineup. Built in Valencia, Spain for sale in 110 countries around the globe – this lightweight aluminum 2.3L powerplant is rated at 310hp and 320 ft/lbs torque and it’s the highest output and largest displacement 4-cylinder engine in the Ford EcoBoost family. EcoBoost’s potent combination of twin scroll turbocharging, direct injection, and variable camshafts allow for the best fuel economy “ever” in a Mustang: 30 plus MPG.

 

First used in the Lincoln MKC crossover, this 2.3L 4-cylinder is based on the same 2.0L Duratec engine architecture as the 240hp 2.0L EcoBoost engine found in Focus ST and Fusion. However, this unique ‘stroker’ 2.3L motor is heavily fortified in almost every way to make more reliable horsepower in the high-performance Mustang application. It represents the state-of-the-art for production engines and may prove to be the strongest and most robust turbocharged inline-4 GDI motor we’ve seen yet.
