What is SN Plus, LSPI and why should I care? |
|
By now you may have heard about Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI), which is an abnormal combustion event that can lead to catastrophic engine damage in Direct Injection Engines. If you don’t work on Direct Injection engines, you may be wondering why does this matter to me? Well, if you build engines that require motor oil, you better pay attention. Since May of 2018, the American Petroleum Institute (API) has allowed licensing of a new category of motor oil called SN Plus, and the reason for this new category (API SN Plus supersedes API SN) lies in LSPI prevention. Essentially, the previous API SN specification formulas actually contributed to LSPI because of the higher Calcium detergent content in these oils. So, to counter that, API approved and released the SN Plus specification which tests for LSPI tendency. |
