GM Active Fuel Management (AFM) System

BY BRIAN ROBERTS

The GM displacement on demand system known as AFM (Active Fuel Management) was implemented in the GM LS engine family to improve fuel economy. This cylinder deactivation
system shuts down four of the eight cylinders on an LS to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The system is controlled by a combination of electrical signals, solenoids and oil pressure.
To properly diagnosis problems with this system you must first understand how it functions.
Major components of the AFM system include: Oil Pump, VLOM (Oil Manifold), AFM Lifters, ECM (Engine Control Module), Primary & Secondary Oil Filter, and Oil Pressure Sensor.
