Synopsis

This is the 5th in a series of 5 webinars that explore the policies, business case, technologies and opportunities provided by green hydrogen and derivatives.

The webinar will be opened by the European Union Ambassador to South Africa Dr Riina Kionka, who will set the scene and introduce the opening keynote speaker.

Thereafter, expert presenters from CSIR, Boston Consulting Group, Royal Haskoning DHV and Plug Power will each make 20 minute presentations, followed by a Q & A session.

The webinar will launch a detailed CSIR study report commissioned by EU-SA Partners for Growth Programme on the near-term decarbonisation potential unlocked by the presence of large-scale hydrogen production and export from ports situated in the Western and Eastern Cape, namely the ports of Saldanha Bay and Nqura (Coega).

To achieve economies of scale, these plants, in addition to exporting hydrogen, can also supply hard-to-abate industries within a 150 km radius, providing fuel for rail, shipping (Gqeberha and Cape Town), buses, airports, refineries and steel plants.

This CSIR study seeks to demonstrate that South Africa’s green hydrogen potential is truly national by adding the impact in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces, and the webinar intends to contribute positively to unlocking the economic and human potential of South Africa.
