RMI Newsflash – Minister of Home Affairs extends exemption permits for Lesotho and Zimbabwe nationals

8 December 2023

Dear Valued Member,

In a significant development, Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has officially extended the validity of exemption permits for Lesotho and Zimbabwe nationals. This directive, outlined in Government Gazette No. 49813 and 49814 dated 4 December 2023, grants a further 12-month extension for holders of Lesotho Exemption Permit (LEP) and Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP).

This extension will allow the LEP and ZEP holders to apply for exemption permits provided for in the Immigration Act during the 12 months period, starting from 29 November 2023 and ending 29 November 2024.

The Minister announced that this extension will be on condition that permit holders cannot change their immigration status in the country while the permit is valid. Under this directive, the holder of the valid exemption permit will be allowed freedom of movement to enter into and depart from the Republic of South Africa.

Additionally, permit holders are entitled to work, seek employment, and conduct business within the country.

It is important to note that those seeking permit extensions must disclose and register all minor children born and residing in South Africa.
